About Lorna

“My desire is to bring glory to God through the passion and gifts he has given me.”

I love my work as a full-time private music teacher.  My main area of focus is singing lessons, but I also teach piano to my singing students as well as to a small contingent of other piano students.  Music has always played a huge role in my life, but I have just come to it full time as a second career during this past decade.  Completing a B.Sc. in Psychology and working in applied fields for years, music remained a background activity with numerous forays into music performance.  Having found a love for jazz as a young adult, I completed a commercial music diploma in voice performance.  I have been a vocalist in various jazz, blues, and rock combos before, during music college, and after.  My first year after graduating from college was spent on the road in a blues-based rock band as lead singer and keyboardist.

Upon returning to live a less nomadic life in Calgary, I made a 180° turn to audition for, and subsequently, sing with the Calgary Opera Company in all of their productions for 6 seasons.  It was at this time that I discovered a love for the amazing art forms of opera and classical singing. I have done solo work in a variety of genres, the highlight of which was singing the role of the Mother in a production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors”, directed by Stan Kane.  One of my most beloved musical formats is SATB quartet singing.  This I have done in both accompanied and a cappella groups.  I have also enjoyed participating in choral singing – classical and jazz.  My most recent large scale project was producing and headlining a fund-raising concert entitled, “From a Woman’s Perspective….A Recital of Song and Story”.

Over the past 20 years, I have been a part-time student, studying with some wonderful voice teachers in Calgary, including Katherine Ardo, Ernest & Sandra Atkinson, Judith Lebane Kane, and Elaine Case.  I have also enjoyed studying piano with LaDona Ahenda, improving my chops on that instrument, and in 2007 I completed my Grade 9 Piano.  Since then I have completed the Advanced History and Theory Certificate and ARCT in Voice Performance through the Royal Conservatory of Music.

In addition to my formal education, I have had the great pleasure of participating in masterclasses and workshops led by internationally acclaimed artists, including jazz musicians, Karen Young and Michele Donanto, and Sheila Jordan, as well as classical/opera singers, including mezzo-soprano, Linda Maguire, baritone, Gaetan Laperier, and singer and otolaryngologist, Dr. Robert Sataloff.

Over the years, I have also enjoyed playing clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone, and piano, as well as leading both adult and children’s choirs.  This rich immersion into the world of music has, happily, brought me to the place where I currently “live”…..in the company of many lovely students of music with whom I have the pleasure of sharing the fruits of my own experiences and learning from them as I teach.
